Flutist Rachel Blumenthal (Chicago Lyric Opera, Chicago Symphony, Sarasota Opera) and oboist David Fitzpatrick (Artistic Director, International Chamber Players) join SMCO, both performing in Seattle for the first time. Works of Barber, Golijov, Tchaikovsky, and Bernstein form a powerful, wordless response to the latter composer's now-ubiquitous quote, "This shall be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." Ms Blumenthal will perform Bernstein's powerful work Halil for flute and orchestra, composed in honor of a young Israeli flutist Yadin Tanenbaum who was killed at the Suez Canal during the 1973 Yom Kippur war.
